Lovers Tarot Card Meaning

Lovers Tarot Card Meaning

The Lovers in TarotThe Lovers tarot card meaning at its most basic is simply relating to a love relationship or intimate partnership which is significant to both people. It does not necessarily mean this relationship will be long-standing, but it does mean there are potent energetic forces at play when this card comes up in the context of a relationship question or tarot reading. It can also relate to close friendships which are non-sexual in nature or a close bond between family members. Read on for other meanings where love may not be relevant to you.

Symbols in the card.

Snake-Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. As snakes shed their skin through sloughing, they are symbols of rebirth, transformation, immortality, and healing. In the Lovers card, you can see the snake is winding its way up the apple tree, and this can be compared to kundalini rising-the energy that goes from our base chakra in yogic/Hindu teachings, to our crown chakra.

Apple tree-Though the forbidden fruit in the Book of Genesis is not identified, popular Christian tradition holds that Adam and Eve ate an apple from the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden. The unnamed fruit of Eden thus became an apple under the influence of the story of the golden apples in the Greek mythology of the Garden of Hesperides. As a result, the apple became a symbol for knowledge, immortality, temptation, the fall of man and sin. One meaning that has been so twisted and misconstrued thanks to the Christian religion, is that it was the female who lead man astray, which ultimately lead to the persecution of women over the ages.

Angel-Salvation, looking at the bigger picture, your higher guide, being guided by something that is bigger than yourself.

Mountain-Building blocks, heaven connecting to earth, merging the physical with the spiritual. The mountain has also been said to be a volcano and therefore symbolises the eruption of passion between people.

Flaming Tree-relates to the ‘tree of life’, where the 12 flames represent the 12 astrological signs, but can also be symbolic of the alchemy of fire-the ability to transcend and be changed by experience. In the case of the card, the male and female energies unite to create a whole. ‘As above so below’ relates to the spiritual and the earthy realm blending together to create life.

Other meanings

The lovers tarot card meaning can also relate to your values and what you hold most important in your life. It is about choice-whether you choose to be true to what your higher, or listen to what your wiser self is saying, or not. It can relate to choosing a path which enables you to grow spiritually and emotionally, or choosing a path which does not allow you to be your best self, or most wise self. We all have an inner guide helping us to distinguish between what enables us to live a life of purpose or meaning, and what does not. The key is, which choice will we make? We have free will on planet earth, and each day we are faced with choices that are either life affirming, or life diminishing.

The Lovers tarot card is the 6th card in the Major arcana, and therefore has the dominant numerical vibration of 6. The number 6 in numerology relates to love, harmony, balance, choice, responsibility, service and thinking beyond oneself.

Questions to ask yourself around this card:

  • Does the person I am with enhance my connection to my true self? Or am I being pulled away from my true self?
  • If I am being pulled away, is it because I am allowing myself to be influenced, or is it because no matter how hard I try, I just cannot find true harmony within the relationship?
  • In this relationship-am I able to keep my eyes on something that is bigger than myself and and be guided by that, or do I feel like I am losing energy being around this person?
  • How is the intense attraction between me and another serving my higher good? Is it something that feels short-lived, and if so, can I be OK with the possibility that this passionate feeling may not last for very long?
  • Can I look past the passionate feelings and seek where our values might align?
  • Career
  • Is the work I am doing right now in line with what I feel to be the most important things in my life?
  • Does my work enhance my life force energy, or does it drag it down?
  • Do I feel excited about my work?
  • If not, is there a way I could bring some excitement back to my work? What aspects might I have been neglecting which could be causing me to not feel aligned with the work I am doing?
  • If there is no way the work I am doing aligns with my core values and depletes my life force energy, where might I begin to look for more suitable work? What core values must be present in order to feel like I am being guided by a higher force?

In relation to self

  • What are my core values?
  • What are my dominant resonant numbers when it comes to my birth date to help me determine what is most important to me? (check out a free numerology report here)
  • Am I ignoring my higher spiritual guides at the expense of my well being and happiness?
  • Am I able to feel passionate about my life, and if not, how can I change that?
  • What am I passionate about?
  • Can I align my passions with my higher values?
  • What choices am I facing at the moment, and which choice aligns with my higher self?

  1. Wow tarot card reading involves much more than I ever imagined! Not being a tarot card reader myself, I always thought that the lovers card meant that you have, or will have a sexual relationship with someone that you are attracted to. I didn’t realize that you could use that card to ask so many different questions in regards to values and what is important in your life.

    1. It is pretty interesting isn’t it? It is why I am hooked…’Creative problem solving’ is how I like to look at the cards. πŸ™‚

  2. Hi Liz

I have had an interest in Tarot for a long time and enjoyed reading you informative and insightful post about The Lovers.

I’m really pleased you covered how this card relates to other life areas like career etc. I sometimes find it challenging to relate the theme of card to my question when on the surface they have nothing to do with each other.

Speaking of which thanks too for the lost if questions. Asking the right question also makes all the difference to a reading.

I notice you did not cover the reversed position of The Lovers and I was curious if this is for a reason or if you have or will devote a compete post to the topic?

    1. Hey Mark, yes I will devote another post to the reversed meaning of the card. I think when it comes to understanding a card when it seems to have no relevance to the question being asked, it is a good time to consider the symbols within the card and the archetypes of the greater stories presented in the card (e.g. the symbolism of Adam and Eve, the forbidden fruit, the temptation to avert our gaze from a higher guide etc etc. It all sounds very religious, but at the same time can be taken as just symbolic rather than relating it to religion, and considering what things float to the surface of your mind as you ponder them. For example, your higher guide may be just a gut feeling, and not associated with some higher being or wise entity. Thanks for your comment!

  3. It’s interesting to have come across learning about the lovers tarot card on your website. My wife and I had our first child this year, and while we have a crazy amount of love for our son, it has seemed to have had an affect on our relationship. My wife and I have already identified the increased disconnection, but reading your article helped me reflect on this issue again and is a good reminder for me to really be present with my wife. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Great Jeremy! You just understood the true value of tarot cards! It is about being able to look at life from another perspective as opposed to the same old stories we tell ourselves. Glad you enjoyed the post!

  4. Hi, It is very interesting to read your post. Although I haven’t had my cards read in a while it still is interesting to read your article.

I like to learn all people say about love and the cards say a lot. The additional signs appearing on this card are telling a lot and the questions you recommended to ask our selves are very good questions to think about every now and then, thanks πŸ™‚

  5. Interesting, I’ve always been someone who doesn’t believe in a certain religion but someone who does believe in a higher power. I love looking for patterns and ideas and connecting them together to try and figure out a true meaning in this world. I’ll definitely be looking into these things and seeing if they work.

    1. Hey Kevin, yes I am the same. Not one for religions but definitely one for seeking patterns and meanings and a higher form of guidance-the part of our brains that Einstein said we didn’t use lol!

  6. I was so surprised how deep the meaning of the Lovers Tarot Card really is, and how many different meanings and interpretations it can have.  It shows that someone really needs to know what they are doing to read cards and they can’t just pick them up and have a clue what they are doing.  This is so interesting, and how it can be interpreted one way or the complete opposite way, depending on the person.  Great article.

    1. Thanks Basie. Yes I totally agree that people need to be responsible with reading tarot. They do need to be understood, because much of the time people can be wary that they are not in full control of their destiny and place too much importance as to what a reader might say who does not have a lot of experience. The art of tarot reading can be likened to life coaching or counselling and it is best approached in a way that gives the person seeking the reading options about their life, not predictions that are set in stone. We have free will.:)

  7. Interesting article. A few months ago, my friend (who is a somewhat tarot reader in-trainee) try to read me. In relation to career, I got an upside Lover card and he told me that I will love my future career. That was when I just resigned from my previous job and still waiting for what my next career will be.

A month later, I got accepted for a job in gaming company. And yes, I love my job until now. It’s interesting that just by one reading, my life can be changed rather drastically. I plan to check my reading again with my friend, this time to read my romance relationship πŸ™‚

    1. Very interesting Alblue! Sometimes just the act of having a reading sets our sights and focus on other things and we literally ‘make’ it happen-eg the reading becomes a self fulfilling prophecy…However, there are other mysterious things about reading tarot which cannot be logically explained, and that is what keeps people coming back to the cards again and again! They can be studied forever!

  8. Interesting Liz,

I get this card often but until now I still do not have any girlfriends that stick with me and I’m wondering if the reading was wrong until I found out that it doesn’t have to be romantic love but friendship love. I guess the universe works in mysterious ways. Loving your tarot reading explanations, keep them coming πŸ˜€

    1. Thanks Riaz! If this is a common card in your life, it could be urging you to consider what your deepest values are and what would lead you to feeling the most flow in your life. It is just a prompt for further evaluation. πŸ™‚

  9. Hey, Liz. How are you? I was raised all my life to stay away from Tarot Cards, however, against all my family wishes, I been very curious about. I had a very wrong concept about the cards, but reading your article here, clarify much more front my eyes. In my country the hang mam means bad news; I don’t know if is the same here in the US. For sure I will email my questions and get a tarot reading.

Thank you so much for this powerful and educational article.

    Cheers to your success,

    1. Hi Telma, yes unfortunately a lot of people were raised to feel that Tarot cards were wrong or evil and it has really only been the misconstrued education from the church and other superstitions. In reality, the are just pictures and stories on a card, drawn from archetypes, myths and legends. That draw on common psychological themes around the world, and even Carl Jung himself had an interest in them.

The Hanged man does not mean bad luck. In fact none of the cards means bad luck. It all comes down to how you interpret them. If you see a card and think superstitiously about it, you are creating your own reality there-NOT the cards creating your reality. Does that make sense?
